Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park MT

Updated: Jun 6, 2022

The most beautiful lake in Montana

Most people think to see beautiful scenery in nature, you have to be out of the United States. Many are shocked when the discover Lake McDonald is in the state of Montana. Lake McDonald is the most beautiful place I have ever laid my eyes on. The way the sun glistens on the water, the rocks that look like something only to be found in a fairytale, the fresh air... it can't get much better than that. I spent 4 hours at the lake and that was the most relaxing 4 hours I have ever experienced. You would think that because this is such a popular lake, it would be packed with tourists. Although there were tourists, it wasn't crowded, and it remained peaceful. I stayed to watch the sunset, which made for beautiful photos. The sun does not set until around 10 PM during the summer months.

You can rent kayaks, paddle boards, motor boats, and paddle boats from a small rental company near the lake. One thing to be aware of is that the water temperature is extremely cold almost daily, even in the summer months. Spending too much time in the water can cause hypothermia, cramping, or numbness. Other than the temperature of the water, there is nothing you need to worry about in the lake! If you are uncomfortable with hiking to the lake due to the amount of wildlife activity in the park, there is an area with restaurants, a small hotel, rental company's, and more that is right next to the lake on the west side of the park, called Apgar Village.

Glacier National Park is surrounded by beautiful mountains, lush fields, and crystal clear rivers, but even with all the other sights I saw there, nothing beat Lake McDonald for me. It felt so peaceful, and I could gaze upon the colorful rocks without ever getting tired of them. Lake McDonald was the highlight of my trip.

If you enjoy hiking, there is a hike that leads to Lake McDonald. The trail is simply called "Lake McDonald Trail". It is a 13.7 mile hike and is supposedly good for all skill levels. The hike will include a river view for at least a portion of your hike. The trail is best in April- October.

If you ever get a chance to go to Lake McDonald, I highly recommend you go. Everything about it was perfect. If you are a photographer, or a lover of sunsets, I suggest you stay to capture pictures of the sunset which takes place around 9:30-10:30 during the summer months.
